Frequently Asked Questions
Who can sell at Green Market? Only Louisiana growers and crafters may sell at Green Market. Middlemen or brokers are not allowed. Regional farmers who produce fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, dairy, honey, preserves, plants and other foods sell at Green Market. Comprehensive regulations govern what may be sold at Green Market. With few exceptions, all items must be grown, raised, foraged, caught, or otherwise produced by the seller.
How are rules enforced? Green Market staff routinely visit growers to make sure that what they sell ensures product integrity and is grown in their fields.
Where are the markets held? Markets are held in downtown Natchitoches on the riverfront. The spaces for the vendors are open. We endeavor, with community support and assistance, to keep these spaces because they allow the market room to grow and are visible to community residents.
How often are they held? The Cane River Green Market begins in April and is held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.and ends on the last Saturday of July.
How many growers participate? Close to 25 farmers and producers attend our markets, generally around 8 to 12 in any one market.
How is the market supported? Farmers pay a fee to sell at Green Market. The fee is $15 per Saturday or Tuesday market. Grants and contributions are gratefully received from individuals, foundations and corporations.
Who runs the program? The Cane River Green Market is a program of the City of Natchitoches Main Street Office. Green Market staff is responsible for market operations, farm visits, publicizing markets, securing permits and working with community groups, city and state agencies to find new and local farmers and crafters.
